Gold is the color of riches and extravagance. Because gold is a precious metal, the color gold is associated with wealth and prosperity. Gold is often used as a color of achievement. Many different highly regarded awards are gold in color. For example, the Nobel Prize, Olympic medals, and Academy Award statuettes. Gold is also the traditional gift for a 50th Wedding Anniversary. It is so strong that many people are not able to tolerate it, so people have to be conditioned to gold over a period of time. GREY

This weeks color is viewed to be a simple and neutral color. about.comreports, “ Gray is a neutral, balanced color. It is a cool, conservative color that seldom evokes strong emotion although it can be seen as a cloudy or moody color.” Grey is the only color that has no direct psychological properties. However, it can be quite suppressive and can indicate a lack of confidence and fear of exposure. When it comes to sports, grey is common color in baseball. Baseball uniforms used for away games are often grey. This came about in the 19th century because away teams didn’t normally have access to laundry facilities on the road so as a result stains were not as noticeable on the darker grey uniforms as opposed to the white uniforms that were normally used. Grey is also a common use in ethics. A moral sense of grey is either used to balance an all-black or all-white view. People are said to have “shades of grey” if they have a neutral view on a certain subject. White is often associated with purity, cleanliness, and innocence. White is the blending of all colors and is a color. According to colormatters.com, ” Light appears colorless or white. Sunlight is white light that is composed of all the colors of the spectrum. A rainbow is proof. You can’t see the colors of sunlight except when atmospheric conditions bend the light rays and create a rainbow.” When it comes to psycological effects white aids in mental clarity, encourages us to clear clutter or obstacles, evokes purification of thoughts or actions and, enables fresh beginnings. The appearance of white in a dream is thought to represent happiness at home. White castles are a symbol of achievement, destiny perfectly fulfilled, and spiritual perfection. When it comes to this weeks color in other cultures white has many different meanings behind it. This weeks color is is known as being the absence of color. Black absorbs all light in the color spectrum. The color black can be viewed as being mysterious, sexy, serious, classic and sophisticated. In most Western countries black is the color of mourning. Among young people, black is often seen as a color of rebellion. Black can also be worn as a symbol of authority, for example court judges wear black robes as well as business men and women wear black suits as a sign of power. In sports many teams choose black as their home jerseys because they can be viewed as more intimidating to the opposing team. Black has varying psychological effects on the mind. According to voiceofcolor.com, “Black creates diverse characteristics: it provides a feeling of protection, comfort, and yet, a sensation of mystery. It is also associated with silence and infinity. While it might be considered a little on the dull side, it also represents steadfastness, simplicity, friendliness, dependability, and health.” In Feng Shui, Brown colors represent the feng shui element of Wood and it is best used in the following feng shui Ba-Gua areas: East (Health & Family), Southeast (Wealth & Abundance), and South (Fame & Reputation). On the other hand Sensational Color.com writes, “The message you send by driving a vehicle that is Brown: Down-to-earth, no nonsense. If, however, your vehicle is a Tan or Taupe, you give a different impression: Timeless, basic, and simple tastes.” When it comes to the psychological effects of brown library.thinkquest.org reports, “Brown is the color of the earth and ultimately home. This color brings feelings of stability and security. Sometimes brown can also be associated with withholding emotion and retreating from the world.” Some have said if you dream of the color brown, it means you will be lucky with money. This week’s color is the color of royalty. About.com reports, “A mysterious color, purple is associated with both nobility and spirituality. The opposites of hot red and cool blue combine to create this intriguing color.” Purple is often associated with the color or royalty because purple was the favorite color of Egypt’s Cleopatra. It has been traditionally associated with royalty in many cultures. Purple robes were worn by royalty and people of authority or high rank. Along with royalty this weeks color has also known to have a very positive effect on psychological disorders because of its calming effect. According to Thinkquest.org, “Purples have been used in the care of mental nervous disorders because they have shown to help balance the mind and transform obsessions and fears. Indigo is often associated with the right side of the brain; stimulating intuition and imagination. Violet is associated with bringing peace and combating shock and fear. Violet has a cleansing effect with emotional disturbances.” In other cultures like Thailand purple is consider to be the color of mourning. Unlike in western cultures its considered to be quite opposite in fact, purple is the color of royalty and wisdom. For example, The Purple Heart, which is a high military honor for those wounded or killed in war embodies much of the same symbolism that is often associated with the color purple. Blue is this weeks color which is known to have a relaxing effect on people. According to About.com, “The cool, calming effect of blue makes time pass more quickly and it can help you sleep. Blue is a good color for bedrooms.” Since it is so peaceful and tranquil blue causes the body to produce calming chemicals, which creates a better sleeping environment. It can also lower the pulse rate and body temperature. Blue is also known for conveying confidence and importance without being sinister or somber. Darker tones of blue, is associated with intelligence, stability, unity, and conservatism. That is why police officers wear blue uniforms and why in the corporate world people view blue suits as a sign of power. Fashion consultants advise people to year blue to job interviews cause it represents loyalty. It is a color often used to decorate offices because research has shown that people are more productive in blue rooms. Other than having a calming effect blue is a very good color to use as an appetite suppressant. Color Matters.com reports, “Weight loss plans suggest putting your food on a blue plate. Or even better than that, put a blue light in your refrigerator and watch your munchies disappear.” Blue is described as a favorite color by many people and is the color most preferred by men. Green signifies life and renewal. According to About.com, “Green is life. Abundant in nature, green signifies growth, renewal, health, and environment.” With both a warming and cooling effect, the color green denotes balance, harmony, and stability. Green has been shown to have many positive effects on the body along with being a stress reliever. Researchers have found that green can improve reading ability. Some students may find that laying a transparent sheet of green paper over reading material increases reading speed and comprehension. This may be attributed to the fact that green is the most restful color on the human eye. Green has also been associated with fertility. Color Matters.com states that green has long been a symbol of fertility for centuries and was once the preferred color choice for wedding gowns in the 15th-century. Even today, green M & M’s are said to send a sexual message. Along with all the positive sides of green there is also a negative side to it as well. Green has also known to be associated with jealousy and envy. This may be a result of the well known sayings “green-eyed monster” or “green with envy.” According to Phrases.org, “ The phrase [green-eyed monster] was used by, and possibly coined by, Shakespeare to denote jealousy, in The Merchant of Venice, 1600.” On a lighter note if green happens to be your favorite color you might posses these traits. Yellow

This week’s color has the most inconsistent meanings out of all of the colors I have blogged about thus far. In one way it represents hope & happiness. The other side of yellow however depicts a more negative connotation. According to About.com, “Yellow is sunshine. It is a warm color that, like red, has conflicting symbolism. On the one hand it denotes happiness and joy but on the other hand yellow is the color of cowardice and deceit.” The positive side of yellow is represented through ribbons that are worn as a sign of hope for loved ones to come home safely from war. However Trivia-Library.com reports where the more negative connotations of yellow stem from by stating, “In some countries Jews were ordered by law to wear yellow clothing because of their alleged betrayal of Jesus, Judas was often depicted wearing a yellow robe signifying inconstancy, jealousy, and deceit, and in 10th-century France, the doors of felons, traitors, and criminals were painted yellow.” Yellow, like all other colors, have different psychological effects on the mind. When rooms are painted yellow people are more likely to have feelings of frustration or anger. Even though yellow is considered to be a cheerful and happy color people are more likely to loose there temper in a yellow room and babies tend to cry more in a room painted yellow. However, yellow is an appropriate color for a room used for studying because it has a stimulating effect on the mind. When it comes to vision yellow tends to be the most straining to the eye because of the high amount of light that is reflected. On a brighter note, if yellow is your favorite color then Care2.com reports, “Yellow usually goes with a sunny and shrewd personality, with a good business head and a strong sense of humor. It is the color of intellectuality and all things to do with the mind. ORANGE

This weeks color is known for being one of the most energetic of colors. According to About .com, “Orange is vibrant. It’s a combination of red and yellow so it shares some common attributes with those colors. It denotes energy, warmth, and the sun. But orange has a bit less intensity or aggression than red, calmed by the cheerfulness of yellow.” Like many of the other colors orange has been proven to have an affect on the body. Orange is a color that stimulates your appetite that is why it is often used in advertising for food products. Orange has also been proven to have an effect on brain activity. Color Wheel Pro.com reports, “ Orange increases oxygen supply to the brain, produces an invigorating effect, and stimulates mental activity.” Orange has shown to have positive effects on your emotional state. It works very well as an antidepressant especially in cases of people feeling lack of self-worth and unwillingness to forgive. This is because the color orange helps to promote socialization. When it comes to other countries orange can represent many different types of things. Orange is the color of Dutch Royalty and is Nederlands’ national color and in places like China and Japan it symbolizes happiness and love. Orange can also be used to set things apart apart from their surrounding. In the United States a color called safety orange is used for construction zone marking devices. OSHA requires certain construction equipment to be painted safety orange in order to alert people of possible danger. According to Geocities.com, if orange is your favorite color then you’re known as the adventurer.
